Colleges and Universities

I started tracking the keyword “humanities” on Twitter.  It appears that many people believe it is the possessive of “humanity.”

But, for better or worse, most “humanities” tweets appear to be from college students in or on their way to classes. Here is a mostly random sampling [handles removed to protect the unwary] from the last day or so:

  • “Seriously just got a writing cramp from bull shitting my humanities home work last minute.”
  • “‘There are no Absolutes!’ Quote of the day in humanities. Word of the day- Repugnant.”
  • “humanities teacher isnt showing up! :D
  • “morning dude. I wouldnt even be awake if it wasn’t for friggin global humanities”
  • “im so bored. humanities is fucking gay as! some gay sub.. looks like something out of the adams family!”
  • “i love humanities its really fun and interesting…really!!”
  • “hi y’all..skipped two classes today (English and humanities)”
  • “writing a humanities paper is like going back and forth in time, …”
  • “Smokin a blunt of sum fire on the way 2 Anthropology n Humanities classes. Learn high/study high=High scores rite? Lol classic. Peace yall”

Sigh.

Of course, instructors in the humanities often share the blame with their listless students if they can’t find a way to make life’s burning questions and history’s greatest moments into something interesting.

At least one scholar thinks there is new evidence that the humanities are on an irreversible glide path to oblivion.  If it is true that universities are marginalizing literature, philosophy, history, etc., will anyone else take up the calling?

Guys like these?
