Andrew Hazlett

The Occasional is an internet base camp for your host and proprietor, Andrew Hazlett.  These days I post more frequently to AndrewHazlett.com and my new web project.

Last year I left the National Endowment for the Humanities after nearly seven years on the senior staff.  Now, I’m preparing to launch The New Modern… an online nexus for people curious about culture and the arts.

I’m also working on several freelance projects, taking graduate courses at Johns Hopkins, and learning all about new/social media.

I’ve worked in and around the overlapping worlds of think tanks, book publishing, journalism, and government for about fifteen years now.  In a previous era of the internet, I ran a small scale online magazine called The Occasional from 1999-2002.

Over time, I’ve learned very little about a great many things.  Now, I’m trying to pull together some of those stray bits and scattered, tangled strings of knowledge, to learn more, to ask questions, and to offer some of my own thoughts.  This blog and my Posterous (at AndrewHazlett.com) are places to blurt half-formed thoughts and share interesting tidbits and links.

I find the decline of print culture extremely depressing, but new forms of media and digital culture are already showing so much promise.  Hopefully, some valuable things associated with old-fashioned ink-and-paper will persist our furiously pixilated future.

I’m very excited about panning for gold in the fast-flowing river digital arts and culture.  In fact, I’m hoping to make something of a career in filtering for artifacts of new or old media that contain amusement or insight.

Best Wishes,

Andrew Hazlett
